About

Asagaya is the Chuo Line's jazz and literary town, a stop between bohemian Koenji and posh Ogikubo. Pearl Center is its spine. It is a long, gently curving covered arcade with about 130 shops, including old rice-cracker makers, tea merchants, bakeries and cheap set-meal diners. Every August the Asagaya Tanabata Festival fills it with giant handmade hariko figures of anime and pop-culture characters made by the shops themselves. On the other side of the tracks, Star Road is a narrow lane lined with standing bars, small jazz bars and hole-in-the-wall restaurants. Many are run by one owner and seat only a handful of people. The town also holds a jazz festival each October. It is ordinary Tokyo neighbourhood life with lots of character.
