About

Intermediatheque occupies two floors of JP Tower (KITTE) beside Tokyo Station, inside the preserved shell of the 1931 Tokyo Central Post Office. The University of Tokyo Museum filled it with its 19th- and early-20th-century academic collections: giant skeletons of whales and giraffes, cases of birds and beetles, plaster casts of classical sculpture, meteorites, early cameras and anatomical models, all arranged with an aesthete's eye in salvaged wooden display cabinets and soft lighting. Labels are minimal and the effect is closer to a Victorian wunderkammer than a modern museum. It is free, rarely crowded and genuinely atmospheric, though photography is strictly prohibited inside.
