About

Tokyo Station's Marunouchi building, designed by Tatsuno Kingo and completed in 1914, has housed a hotel since 1915. Over the decades Kawabata Yasunari and Matsumoto Seicho stayed and wrote here. The building lost its domes in the 1945 air raids. Between 2006 and 2012 it was restored to its original three-storey form with both domes rebuilt, and the hotel reopened in October 2012 with 150 rooms in classic European style. The interior corridors run more than 300 m along the length of the building. The highlight is the Dome Side rooms, whose windows look into the ornate octagonal domes where travellers pass through the ticket gates below. Non-guests can still sample the building: the Bar Oak keeps exposed original 1914 brickwork, Bar & Café Camellia serves afternoon tea, and the Lobby Lounge sits where the first-class waiting room once was. The guest-only Atrium lounge sits under the central roof.
