About

Hoshino Resorts opened Hoshinoya Tokyo in 2016 to prove that a Japanese inn could work as a skyscraper. Architect Rie Azuma wrapped the tower in a dark metal lattice cut with an Edo-komon pattern, so from the street it reads like a giant lacquer box among the glass offices of Otemachi. Inside, the logic is pure ryokan: you step out of your shoes at the entrance into a hall lined floor-to-ceiling with bamboo and chestnut shoe lockers, and walk on tatami from then on. Each floor has only six rooms and its own Ochanoma lounge, where tea, sake and snacks are laid out around the clock, so each floor functions like a small inn. At the top is a black, dim indoor-outdoor bath fed by hot spring water drawn from about 1,500 m below, with walls that frame nothing but sky. Dinner is a seasonal Nippon Cuisine tasting menu in the basement dining room. This is a place to stay rather than drop in: almost everything is reserved for guests, so non-guests mostly admire the lattice facade from the street.
