About

The Palace Hotel has stood on the edge of the Imperial Palace moat since 1961. Its original building, clad in about 1.6 million Shigaraki tiles, won Japan's BCS architecture prize. It was rebuilt as a 23-storey tower by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and reopened in May 2012 as Palace Hotel Tokyo. It is one of the few top-tier Tokyo hotels that are Japanese-owned and independent. The site is unbeatable: rooms and terraces look directly over the Wadakura moat, the fountain park and the palace's outer gardens. GA Design International did the interiors in a restrained palette of wood, stone and natural light, and the hotel holds a significant collection of contemporary Japanese art. The Royal Bar keeps a painstaking restoration of the 1961 counter and a back bar whose refrigerated glass cabinets were designed for its first chief bartender, 'Mr. Martini' Kiyoshi Imai. The Palace Lounge serves afternoon tea facing the moat, and Grand Kitchen has a terrace on the water.
