About

Aman's first city hotel opened in December 2014 on floors 33–38 of Otemachi Tower and is still the benchmark for calm luxury in Tokyo. Kerry Hill Architects took the proportions of a Japanese house and stretched them vertically. Stepping out of the lift, you face a lobby about 30 m tall, enclosed in a giant shoji-like lantern of washi paper on a timber frame. A raked stone garden sits in the middle, and the basalt stone, cypress wood and paper screens filter the city into soft light. Floor-to-ceiling windows look across the Imperial Palace gardens and, on clear days, to Mount Fuji. The Lounge by Aman, under the paper ceiling, is the easy way in for non-guests for afternoon tea and cocktails. The spa below has a 30 m basalt pool facing the skyline. Kerry Hill died in 2018, and this is one of his signature late works.
