Hoppy Street (Asakusa) ホッピー通り
A street of open-front izakaya just west of Senso-ji where locals drink hoppy and eat beef-tendon stew at outdoor tables from noon.
About
Officially part of Asakusa's 'Nimon' entertainment district, Hoppy Street got its nickname from hoppy, the low-alcohol beer-flavoured drink mixed with shochu that fuelled postwar Tokyo. Some 20 izakaya line both sides with plastic stools on the pavement, red lanterns, and simmering pots of gyu-suji nikomi (beef tendon stew). Many open from late morning, so it is the classic place to drink in the afternoon after a temple visit. It sits next to the Rox complex and the old Asakusa theatres.
Highlights
- Outdoor tables under red lanterns and plastic awnings
- Hoppy 'sets': shochu plus a bottle of hoppy you top up yourself
- Beef-tendon nikomi stew, a local specialty, at nearly every shop
- Day drinking from noon, rare in Tokyo
Tips
- Order 'Hoppy set' then 'naka' (refill of shochu) and 'soto' (more hoppy)
- Go mid-afternoon on a weekday for street-side seats
- Pair with the Jakotsuyu bathhouse three minutes away
