About

Yose halls are where Japan's traditional comic storytellers perform, and Asakusa Engei Hall, on the old Rokku entertainment strip, is the most atmospheric. Two big rakugo associations alternate in ten-day runs, so a day show and an evening show each feature some 20 acts: kimono-clad rakugoka kneeling on a cushion to tell a story with just a fan and a hand towel, plus iromono acts, kamikiri artists who snip silhouettes to audience requests, kyokugei jugglers, magicians and stand-up duos. Performances are in Japanese, so you won't catch the punchlines, but the craft, rhythm and the crowd of elderly regulars munching snacks make it a fascinating window into Edo-style popular culture. There's no changeover between sessions, so one ticket lets you stay from late morning to night, and discounted tickets are sold after 18:00 and 19:00.
