Hibiya Park 日比谷公園
Japans first Western-style park (1903), a 16-hectare green square between the Imperial Palace and Ginza with fountains, ponds, flower beds and a famous old restaurant.
About
Opened in 1903 on a former army parade ground, Hibiya Park introduced European-style landscaping to Tokyo with formal flower beds, a large fountain and the Shinji-ike pond. It is still the downtowns main gathering place, hosting the open-air concert hall, Hibiya Public Hall, seasonal flower and chrysanthemum shows, and food and beer festivals on its plaza. Look for the Kubikake ginkgo, a giant tree said to have been saved from felling when the park was built, and Matsumoto-ro, a restaurant operating here since the park opened. Entry is free.
Highlights
- Large fountain and formal flower beds
- Kubikake ginkgo, a centuries-old tree that turns gold in late November
- Matsumoto-ro, a restaurant operating in the park since 1903
- Weekend festivals and markets on the central plaza
Tips
- Check the plaza event schedule: big festivals make weekends busy.
- Hibiya Station exits open straight onto the park; Yurakucho and Ginza are 5 to 10 minutes away.
- Parts of the park are being renovated in phases, so some areas may be fenced off.
