About

Since 2015 a 12 m-tall Godzilla head and claw, matched to the monster's 50 m scale, has loomed over Kabukicho from the terrace of the Shinjuku Toho Building, home to the Toho Cinemas multiplex and Hotel Gracery Shinjuku. Toho, the studio that created Godzilla in 1954, made Kabukicho its unofficial residence: the ward even granted Godzilla a special residency certificate. The best view is from Sakura-dori (dubbed Godzilla Road) leading north from Yasukuni-dori, where the head appears to rise over the buildings. At night it's lit up and the neon of Kabukicho makes it look ready to rampage. The close-up terrace is mainly accessible to hotel guests and visitors of the 8th-floor café.
