Ginza Chuo-dori Pedestrian Paradise 銀座中央通り 歩行者天国
On weekend and holiday afternoons Ginza's main street closes to cars, so you can stand in the middle of the road and shoot the department-store canyon end to end.
About
When the Ginza hokoten (pedestrian paradise) is on, walk out to the centre line of Chuo-dori around Ginza 2 to 3-chome and shoot south: the street runs dead straight between Matsuya, Mitsukoshi and the Wako clock tower, with flagship facades lining both sides. A longer lens compresses the crowds and storefronts into a dense city scene, while a wide angle from low down exaggerates the empty asphalt. Late afternoon gives warm side light on the west-side facades. Stay inside the closed zone, do not set up tripods, and leave the road promptly when staff start reopening it to traffic.
Highlights
- Standing shot down the centre of Ginza's main street
- Flagship facades and the Wako clock tower in one line
- Seasonal flags and street decorations
- People-watching with the city's best-dressed shoppers
Tips
- The closure runs only on weekends and public holidays in the afternoon, and is cancelled in bad weather or for events; check before going.
- Tripods and selfie poles are discouraged in the crowds.
- Shoot from the 2-chome end looking south for the cleanest view to the 4-chome crossing.
