About

Arakicho was once a pleasure quarter centred on the estate of the Matsudaira lords of Takasu, whose garden pond, Tsunokami-ike (the 'whip pond', said to be where Tokugawa Ieyasu washed his riding whip), survives at the bottom of a steep hollow. Around it, narrow stone-stepped alleys are lined with tiny bars, fine Japanese restaurants and izakaya, many run by ex-geisha-trade families. It is where Japanese editors and chefs drink, quietly. At night the lanterns reflect on the dark pond around the Benzaiten shrine, few places in Tokyo feel so secret.
