About

Around 1717 Yamamoto Shinroku, gatekeeper at Chomeiji temple, began salting the leaves that fell from the Sumida embankment's cherry trees and wrapping them around bean-filled cakes for passing pilgrims. That was the birth of the Kanto-style sakuramochi, and the same family business still makes them, in exactly one style, a few steps from the temple. The cakes are thin, chewy pancakes folded around koshian, swaddled in three or so fragrant salted Oshima cherry leaves, whether you eat the leaves is a long-running debate (the shop suggests removing them). Order at the counter, sit in the small tearoom with a cup of sencha, and watch locals pick up boxes as gifts. It is a living piece of Edo food history, sold year-round.
