Chatei Hatou 茶亭 羽當
A hushed, antique-filled coffee house a few minutes from Shibuya's scramble, famous for hand-drip coffee poured into cups chosen from a wall of fine porcelain to suit you.
Coffee + cake: ¥1,800
About
Up a flight of stairs off Meiji-dori, Chatei Hatou feels like a European salon run by Japanese coffee obsessives. A long wooden counter faces shelves of hundreds of porcelain cups; the bartender-like masters select one for each customer based on their look and mood. Coffee is hand-dripped with fierce concentration, the house blend is dark and syrupy, and the homemade chiffon and cheese cakes are legendary. In a district built on noise, it is a temple of quiet; Tokyo baristas list it among their favourites.
