Philippe Starck's black Super Dry Hall with its 300-plus-tonne golden 'flame' on the roof, next to Asahi's golden beer-glass tower: the cheekiest landmark on the Sumida, directly across the river from Asakusa.

About

Completed in 1989 for Asahi Breweries' centenary, the pair of buildings at Azumabashi is pure bubble-era confidence. The 22-storey Asahi Group headquarters is clad in amber glass and topped with a white form to suggest a glass of beer with its frothy head, while the low black granite Super Dry Hall beside it was designed by French designer Philippe Starck, its rooftop crowned by the Flamme d'Or: a giant gold-leafed sculpture meant to represent the burning heart of Asahi beer. Tokyoites took one look and nicknamed it the 'golden poop' (kin no unko), and the name stuck. Seen with Tokyo Skytree rising behind it, the duo forms one of the most photographed skylines in the city. On the 22nd floor of the tower, the Asahi Sky Room bar serves draft Asahi with views over Asakusa and the river.
