About
The Nanko Bird Sanctuary was built on reclaimed land to give back wetland habitat lost to port development. Its three tidal flat ponds attract plovers, sandpipers and other shorebirds on migration, along with herons, egrets and wintering ducks. A free observation building has telescopes and windows facing the flats, and there are hides along the edges. It is a surprising pocket of wildlife next to the container port.
Highlights
- Tidal flats that attract migrating shorebirds
- Free observation building with telescopes
- Herons, egrets and wintering ducks

Tips
- Bring binoculars; the best viewing is a few hours either side of high tide.
- Peak seasons are April to May and August to October for shorebird migration.
- Check opening hours before visiting: the observation building is not open around the clock.
