Maishima Incineration Plant 舞洲工場
A waste incineration plant on Maishima island designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, with a golden-ball chimney and fairy-tale facades.
About
Osaka's Maishima incineration plant looks more like a theme park castle than a utility: colourful wavy stripes, irregular windows and a tall chimney topped with a golden sphere, all designed by Austrian artist Hundertwasser. Photograph it from the roadside and the waterfront to the south, where the whole facade fits in frame; it is especially striking under blue skies. Tours of the working plant are offered by advance reservation; check the operator's site.
Highlights
- Hundertwasser's colourful, curvy architecture
- Golden sphere atop the chimney
- Clear views from the surrounding roads
- Plant tours by reservation
Tips
- The plant is a working facility: shoot from public roads unless on a tour.
- Combine with USJ across the water or a Maishima drive.
- Bus service is limited; check timetables from Sakurajima Station.
