About

Kaiyukan opened in 1990 at Tempozan Harbor Village with a striking concept: visitors take an escalator to the top floor and then walk down a long spiral ramp around a central tank representing the Pacific Ocean, about 9 m deep and holding 5,400 tonnes of water, where a whale shark, manta rays, hammerheads and schools of fish swim. Around it are habitats of the Pacific Rim, from Japan's forests with river otters to the Aleutian Islands, Monterey Bay seals, the Great Barrier Reef, Antarctic penguins and the Ecuadorian rainforest. A touch pool lets you feel sharks and rays, and newer zones add jellyfish, Arctic ringed seals and the Maldives. The buildings mosaic exterior by Cambridge Seven Associates is itself a landmark of the Osaka Bay area.
