Naniwa Palace Historical Park 難波宮跡公園
An open green park on the site of the 7th- and 8th-century imperial palace of Naniwa, where reconstructed stone platforms of the Great Hall let you picture Osaka as Japan's capital, 1,300 years ago.
About
Long before Osaka Castle, the Uemachi plateau held one of Japan's earliest capitals. In 645, after the Taika coup, Emperor Kotoku moved the court here and built the Naniwa Nagara-Toyosaki Palace; a second palace was built on the same site in the 8th century under Emperor Shomu. Excavations since the 1950s revealed the foundations, and the park now has raised platforms marking the Daigokuden (Great Hall of State) and corridors, plus explanatory panels. It is mostly open lawn used by locals for walks, and few tourists come, but the best way to understand it is to look down from the 10th floor of the Osaka Museum of History next door, which reconstructs the Great Halls interior with life-size costumed officials, and then walk the site itself.
