About

The Fujita family, Meiji-era industrialists, built one of Japan's great private art collections, including nine National Treasures and dozens of Important Cultural Properties. The old storehouse museum closed in 2017, and in 2022 a new building opened on the same site by Kyobashi, with a transparent glass front, an open lobby with a tea counter selling matcha and freshly grilled dango, and a single dark exhibition room where a small rotating selection is shown with great care. The most famous piece is the yohen tenmoku tea bowl from Southern Song China, whose iridescent spots are like a starry sky; it is displayed on a rotating basis. The garden around the building preserves the familys old tahoto pagoda and stone lanterns.
