Japan Mint Museum and Cherry Blossom Passage 造幣博物館・桜の通り抜け
The free museum of the Japan Mint in a Meiji-era brick building, with coins, medals and minting machines; for one week in mid-April the riverside Mint grounds open for the Sakura no Torinuke, a 560-metre walk under late-blooming cherries.
About
Osaka has been home to the Japan Mint since 1871, and its museum occupies the brick thermal power plant of 1911 on the Okawa River. Displays cover the history of Japanese coinage from ancient copper coins to gold oban and modern commemorative issues, with medals, a coin chest you can try to lift, and old minting machines. Every spring, usually in mid-April after the city's main cherry season, the Mint opens its riverside lane for the Sakura no Torinuke, a tradition since 1883: about 340 trees of around 140 varieties, many double-flowered and rare, along a 560 m one-way path, and night illumination draws huge crowds. Dates are announced each spring and advance online reservations have been required in recent years.
