About
Uji Park occupies Tonoshima and Tachibana-jima, two islands in the Uji River joined to both banks by bridges. Tonoshima holds a 15-metre stone pagoda erected in 1286 by the monk Eison, said to be one of the largest in Japan. The islands are the base for summer cormorant fishing boats and make a calm walk between Byodo-in and Ujigami Shrine. Benches look out over the fast-flowing river.
