About

Uji, 20 minutes from Kyoto by JR or Keihan, is Japan's matcha capital and the setting of the last chapters of The Tale of Genji. The Uji City Tourist Center sits on Asagiri-dori along the east bank of the Uji river, across the bridge from Byodo-in and next to the Taihoan tea house where you can try a short tea ceremony. Inside are free maps of the Genji walking trail, tea shops and shrines, information on Uji river cormorant fishing in summer, and toilets and benches for a break. It is the natural midpoint between Byodo-in on the west bank and Ujigami Shrine and the Tale of Genji Museum on the east bank.
