About

Uji is the home of Japanese matcha, and Taihoan is the city's own teahouse, set in a small garden on the east bank of the river next to the Uji City Tourist Center. Members of different tea schools take turns hosting, so the details of the ceremony vary by day. Visitors sit on tatami and are served a bowl of Uji matcha with a seasonal sweet, with explanations available in English. It is affordable and quick, making it a good introduction to tea ceremony before shopping at the tea houses on Byodo-in Omotesando.
