Tenka Ippin Sohonten 天下一品 総本店
The original shop of the Tenka Ippin chain, which began as a street stall in 1971 and invented Kyoto's "kotteri" ramen: a chicken-and-vegetable broth so thick a spoon nearly stands up in it.
Pork chashu ramen: ¥1,310
About
Tenka Ippin started as a yatai (street stall) pushed around Kyoto in 1971, and its founder spent years perfecting a soup that would become a national style: kotteri, a porridge-thick broth of chicken and vegetables, sweet, savoury and clinging to every noodle. The Kitashirakawa flagship near Kyoto University is the spiritual home of the 200-plus-shop chain and still the place fans make pilgrimages to; some say the soup is richer here. Order kotteri, add the house garlic-chili paste, and pair with fried rice. Open until 1:00 most nights.
