Saryo Tsujiri Gion Honten 茶寮都路里 祇園本店
The upstairs tea salon of Uji tea merchant Gion Tsujiri, credited with popularising the tall matcha parfait. A Gion queue institution since 1978.
About
Tsujiri was founded in Uji in 1860, and its Gion shop on Shijo-dori sells tea on the ground floor while the Saryo tea salon upstairs serves the dessert that made it famous: the Tokusen Tsujiri Parfait, a tall glass of matcha ice cream, matcha jelly, chestnut, castella cake and shiratama dumplings. Other options include matcha with wagashi, matcha warabi-mochi and green-tea noodles. The queue often stretches down the stairs, but turnover is reasonably quick.
