Nakamura Tokichi Honten (Uji) 中村藤吉本店
An 1859 Uji tea merchant's house turned into Japan's most famous matcha cafe: matcha parfaits, jelly in bamboo cups and cha-soba, in a wooden building on the old Uji road.
Tea + sweet set: ¥1,500
About
Nakamura Tokichi was founded in Uji in 1859, and the main shop occupies its original merchant's house and tea-processing buildings, recognised as an important cultural landscape. The cafe at the back serves the sweets that went viral long before Instagram: matcha parfaits layered with cream, mochi and jelly, namacha jelly served in a bamboo tube, and matcha soba and udon. The front shop sells loose-leaf tea, matcha and gifts. Uji, the birthplace of Japan's finest green tea, is 20-30 minutes from Kyoto by JR or Keihan.
