Tekona Reido 手児奈霊神堂
A small, much-loved shrine to Tekona, the tragic beauty of Mama from Japans oldest poetry anthology, now prayed to for safe childbirth and good matches, with a lotus pond that blooms in summer.
About
According to the Manyoshu, Tekona of Mama was so beautiful that many men fought over her, and rather than cause more strife she threw herself into the sea. Tekona Reido stands where her grave is said to have been, at the foot of the hill below Guhoji, and is looked after by the temple. Today it is visited by couples and expectant mothers praying for easy births and happy marriages. Next to it, the Tekona pond fills with lotus and irises in early summer, and a few steps away is the Mama-no-tsugihashi bridge, another site of Manyoshu verse. It is tiny and quiet, but the layered history, the poetry stones and the old residential lanes give a real sense of how deep Ichikawas roots go.
