About

In 741 Emperor Shomu ordered every province to build an official monastery and nunnery, and Shimousas were raised on the Kokubun plateau in todays Ichikawa. The great Nara-period complex vanished centuries ago, but excavations revealed the layout of the pagoda, golden hall and lecture hall, and the site is a National Historic Site with markers and a small park. The present Shimousa Kokubunji, a Shingon temple that inherited the name, stands on the site with a gate, main hall and quiet grounds, and the nearby nunnery ruins (Kokubunniji-ato) are laid out as a park too. Its an atmospheric, little-visited stop for anyone interested in early Japanese history, on the same plateau as Satomi Park and Guhoji.
