About

The Shibayama area is dotted with kofun burial mounds, and the Tonozuka and Himezuka mounds yielded rows of haniwa: clay figures of warriors, women and men wearing tall hats with long beards and side locks, laid out as if in a procession. The museum, renewed in 2021, displays these figures and explains the mounds and the society that built them, with reproductions you can see up close. Admission is cheap, it is quiet, and it pairs naturally with Shibayama Nioson temple a few minutes' walk away.
