Tatsumaki Jigoku (Spout Hell) 龍巻地獄
A geyser that blasts boiling water skyward roughly every 30 to 40 minutes for 6 to 10 minutes, capped by a stone roof so it doesn't fly 50 m high. National Place of Scenic Beauty.
Common ticket (elementary/junior high): ¥1,200
About
Tatsumaki Jigoku is an intermittent geyser, one of the most regular in the world. About every half hour to 40 minutes, water at around 105°C erupts from a fissure in a rocky grotto for several minutes; left uncovered it would shoot some 50 m, so a stone ceiling now contains the spray, which still billows dramatically. Tiered seating faces the vent, and a sign at the entrance tells you the time of the last eruption so you can estimate the next. It is a 1-minute walk from Chinoike Jigoku, so the pair are always visited together.
