About

Hyotan Onsen has been running in Kannawa since 1922 and is the easiest all-in-one onsen for first-timers: big gender-separated indoor and outdoor baths fed entirely by its own source (it trademarked the phrase 'gensen juwari' for 100 percent unblended spring water), a row of utase-yu waterfall showers that pound your shoulders from three metres up, a steam bath, a sand bath (with rental yukata) and bookable private family baths. The women's side was enlarged in a renewal, and the on-site restaurant serves jigoku-mushi (food steamed over the volcanic vents) alongside toriten and dango-jiru, so you can eat in your yukata between soaks. Signature gourd-shaped tower in the garden marks the entrance. It is one of the few places in Beppu where you can bathe until 1 a.m.
