Katase Nishihama and Kugenuma Beach 片瀬西浜・鵠沼海水浴場
Shonans big surf and summer beach, running west from the Enoshima bridge past the Enoshima Aquarium, with Mount Fuji views and one of the liveliest beach scenes near Tokyo.
About
West of the Benten Bridge, Katase Nishihama and Kugenuma beaches form a long, wide stretch of sand that is the heart of Shonan beach culture. Surfers are out year round, beach volleyball courts and skate parks line the coast, and in summer the beach huts here are some of the biggest and busiest in Kanagawa. The New Enoshima Aquarium sits right behind the beach, and on clear days Mount Fuji appears beyond the coast to the west, especially beautiful at sunset in winter. A cycling and jogging path runs along the seawall for kilometres toward Chigasaki.
Highlights
- Long wide beach with surfers in the water year round
- Mount Fuji views to the west, best at winter sunsets
- New Enoshima Aquarium right behind the sand
- Seaside cycling and running path toward Chigasaki
- Big, lively umi no ie scene in summer
Tips
- Swim only in the flagged area during the official season; rip currents are common outside it.
- Rent a bicycle and ride the coastal path for Fuji views.
- Weekends in July and August are packed; arrive before 10:00.
- Enoshima Aquarium plus the beach makes an easy rainy-or-shine combination.
