About

Opened in 1980 to mark Japan-China friendship, this garden inside Ueno Park grows about 500 peony plants of some 110 varieties for its spring festival and about 160 winter peonies protected by straw hoods. Since 2016 an autumn dahlia show adds around 200 plants under Japanese umbrellas. The five-storey pagoda of Kan'ei-ji rises just beyond the garden wall.
