About

Toshimaya was founded in 1596 by Toshimaya Jūemon, who opened a sake shop at Kamakura-gashi, the quay on the moat near Kanda Bridge where stone and timber for Edo Castle were landed. He sold sake cheaply and served big skewers of tofu dengaku brushed with red miso to go with it, which is why Toshimaya is sometimes named as one of the ancestors of the izakaya. The shop became famous for shirozake, a sweet, milky drink for the Hina doll festival in March, and Edo prints show crowds queuing for it. Toshimaya still sells its Kinkon sake and, as a revival of its original trade, runs Toshimaya Saketen, a sake shop with a standing bar, in the Kanda Square complex, close to where it began.
