About

Designed by Tatsuno Kingo and opened in 1914, the 335 m-long Marunouchi façade of Tokyo Station lost its domes and third floor to the 1945 air raids and was patched up with simple octagonal roofs for 67 years. A five-year restoration completed in 2012 brought back the original silhouette, slate domes and the North and South Dome halls, whose ochre ceilings swirl with eagles, zodiac animals and garlands. The building also houses the historic Tokyo Station Hotel and the Tokyo Station Gallery, where original brick walls are exposed. Across the plaza, the restored Gyoko-dori boulevard runs straight to the Imperial Palace, and the 6th-floor KITTE Garden rooftop next door is a free terrace looking down on the whole façade.
