About

Opened in February 2012, Tokyo Gate Bridge links Wakasu in Koto ward with the Central Breakwater reclaimed land. Because it lies under Haneda flight paths, height was limited to under 98.1 m, yet ships need 54.6 m of clearance: engineers chose a continuous truss instead of a suspension or cable-stayed design, which produced the distinctive dinosaur silhouette. The 440 m main span was second only to Osaka's Minato Ohashi among Japan's truss bridges. At night it is lit with energy-saving LED lights powered partly by solar panels. A pedestrian walkway on the bridge is reached by elevator from the Wakasu side and gives views of Tokyo Skytree, the bay, planes landing at Haneda and, on clear days, Mount Fuji.
