About

When the original Hotel Okura was torn down in 2015, design lovers around the world protested. Its lobby by Yoshiro Taniguchi was a masterpiece of 1960s Japanese modernism. The reborn hotel, which opened in September 2019, answered them. Yoshio Taniguchi, Yoshiro's son and the architect of MoMA's 2004 expansion, rebuilt the complex as two buildings: the 41-storey Okura Prestige Tower and the low-rise Okura Heritage Wing. He then recreated the lobby almost exactly. The Okura lanterns, chains of faceted polyhedra, hang again over low lacquer tables set in a plum-blossom pattern, and the lobby is screened by asanoha-patterned lattice and shoji. The Orchid Bar keeps the hand-blown Ranka lamps and silverware stamped with dates going back to 1962. Next door is the Okura Museum of Art, Japan's oldest private art museum. Non-guests are welcome in the lobby, the bars and the restaurants.
