About

MOMAT's collection gallery is the essential overview of modern Japanese art. Spread over three floors and around 200 works on display at any time, it moves from Meiji-era nihonga and yoga painters (Kishida Ryusei, Kuroda Seiki, Hishida Shunso's Fallen Leaves) through wartime 'war record paintings' rarely shown elsewhere to postwar avant-garde, Gutai and contemporary artists. Room 1 always shows highlights including several Important Cultural Properties. Between galleries, the 'Room with a View' on the 4th floor looks out over the Imperial Palace moats and Marunouchi skyline. The museum sits in the Kitanomaru Park area near Chidorigafuchi, among Tokyo's best cherry-blossom spots, and stays open late on Fridays and Saturdays.
