About

Built in 1934 as the Gunjin Kaikan, a hall for military veterans, this is one of the best examples of the Teikan (Imperial Crown) style, a 1930s blend of Western reinforced-concrete architecture with Japanese tiled roofs. During the February 26 Incident in 1936, the army's martial-law headquarters was set up here; after the war it became Kudan Kaikan, a hotel and wedding hall, until part of the ceiling collapsed during the 2011 earthquake. Rather than demolishing it, developers preserved and restored the historic front portion and added a modern office tower behind, reopening in October 2022 as Kudan Kaikan Terrace. The restored facade, entrance hall and some historic rooms can be seen, and a rooftop garden and cafe or seasonal beer terrace give views across the Edo Castle moat toward the Budokan and Kitanomaru Park.
