Kitanomaru Park 北の丸公園
A wooded 19-hectare park on the old northern enclosure of Edo Castle, home to the Nippon Budokan and the Science Museum and ringed by cherry-lined moats.
About
Kitanomaru was the northern compound of Edo Castle and opened as a national park garden in 1969 to mark Emperor Showas 60th birthday. Today it mixes big lawns, a pond and tall trees with the Nippon Budokan arena and the Science Museum, and it borders the moats of Chidorigafuchi and Ushigafuchi, two of Tokyos most famous cherry blossom spots. Entry through the Edo-era Tayasumon and Shimizumon gates makes a good add-on to a walk around the Imperial Palace. Admission is free.
Highlights
- Edo Castle stone walls and gates around the park edge
- Lawns and pond under mature trees, quiet even on weekends
- Nippon Budokan and the Science Museum inside the grounds
- Cherry blossoms along the Chidorigafuchi and Ushigafuchi moats
Tips
- Combine with the Chidorigafuchi moat walk in late March to early April.
- On Budokan concert days the north side gets very crowded around the gates.
- The Imperial Palace East Gardens are a 10 minute walk south.
