About
The Tamagawa Josui was dug in 1653 to bring water from the Tama River at Hamura to Edo, and much of its course through western Tokyo is now lined by a wooded green path. The sunken canal, framed by tall oaks and cherry trees, makes a cool walk in summer and a long cherry tunnel in spring. Sections through Kodaira and Mitaka are the most natural; near Mitaka the novelist Dazai Osamu lived and died beside the canal.
