Tonogayato Garden 殿ヶ谷戸庭園
A hidden Taisho-era villa garden right by Kokubunji Station. A lawn on the cliff top drops into a ravine of bamboo, maples and a spring-fed pond. It is one of Tokyo's nine metropolitan gardens and by far the least visited.

About
Built in 1913–15 as the country villa of Eguchi Teijo, a director of the South Manchuria Railway, and later owned by the Mitsubishi Iwasaki family, Tonogayato Garden is a "kaiyu" stroll garden built along the edge of the Kokubunji cliff. On top is a broad lawn with a Western-style house. Below, paths drop through a bamboo grove and a maple ravine to a spring-fed pond with an elegant teahouse, the Koyo-tei. In late November its maples are fantastic, and in spring there are katakuri lilies and kerria. It costs very little, is a few minutes from the station, and is often almost empty even at peak colour.
