About

Kunitachi was laid out in the 1920s by the developer of Seibu, Tsutsumi Yasujiro, as a European-style academic town. Its main avenue, Daigaku-dori, has wide green verges planted with about 200 cherry trees and gingko trees that turn the road pink in early April and gold in late November. Halfway along, Hitotsubashi University's campus is open to the public. Its 1920s–30s Romanesque Revival buildings, including the Kanematsu Auditorium with its gargoyle carvings and the clock-towered library, make it feel more like an old European college. The street is lined with old-school coffee shops, bakeries and bookshops. The old triangular-roofed station building of 1926 was rebuilt in 2020 and is now a small tourist information centre.
