About

The terminus of the Keio Takao Line was transformed in 2015 by Kengo Kuma, who wrapped the station in a sweeping roof of wooden slats inspired by the temple architecture of Yakuo-in at the summit, and described it as a threshold between the everyday and the sacred mountain. The platforms continue the theme with timber and lantern-style lighting. Right beside it, Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu opened the same year, drawing alkaline spring water from about 1,000 m underground into indoor and outdoor baths, the ideal post-hike reward. From the station, it is a short walk to the cable car and chairlift base station and the start of the main hiking trails. Keio's fares from Shinjuku make this one of the cheapest mountain escapes from Tokyo, about 50 minutes away.
