About

Takahata Fudo is one of the three great Fudo temples of the Kanto region, with roots in the 8th century. Its Fudo hall, rebuilt in 1342, is one of the oldest buildings in Tokyo. The precinct climbs a wooded hill behind a striking vermilion five-storey pagoda. A loop trail of about 2 km on the hill behind it is a miniature Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, with 88 Buddhist statues on its route. In June the temple holds its Hydrangea Festival, when about 200 varieties and 7,500 bushes cover the hillside. Hijikata Toshizo, vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, was born nearby, and the temple has his memorial and statue. Tourists rarely come this far out, but locals love it in rainy season and at autumn colour.
