About

TAIKO-LAB is a chain of taiko studios that teaches everyone from office workers to kids, and its Aoyama branch runs an experience course for overseas visitors bookable in English. You change into a festival happi coat, learn stance and how to grip the bachi sticks, then drill rhythms that build into a short piece you play together as a group, finishing with a burst of genuine noise and adrenaline. Instructors are professional players who keep things upbeat and patient, so it works for families with children (from about age three), groups of friends and solo travellers. It's surprisingly physical, your forearms will feel it, and a great antidote to a day of museums. Studios are fully soundproofed, so you can hit as hard as you like.
