About

Sunamachi Ginza runs for around 670 metres through Kitasuna, a residential district far from any major sight, with about 180 shops packed shoulder to shoulder. It is famous across Tokyo as an osozai (ready-made side dish) street: stalls sell oden ingredients by the piece, fried chicken, croquettes, grilled fish, rice crackers, pickles and tamagoyaki, and the area's grandmothers queue with their shopping trolleys every afternoon. There is no arcade roof and no tourist signage, just hand-written price boards and shopkeepers calling out deals. Snacking your way from one end to the other for a few hundred yen is a classic local afternoon.
