About

Toyomi-bashi is the first bridge on the Nihonbashi River, right where it flows into the Sumida beside Eitai Bridge. Rebuilt after the 1923 earthquake, it is a rare Vierendeel truss: rectangular frames without diagonals, designed to balance visually with the big Eitai arch next door. The riveted steelwork is painted white and lit up in a soft white-orange in the evening, making it a favourite "hidden" night spot and drama location. It is a Chuo City Cultural Property and was listed as a civil engineering heritage structure in 2022. Legend says the 47 ronin crossed here on their way to Sengakuji after their 1703 vendetta.
