About

The 8th shogun Yoshimune planted cherry trees along the Sumida River in the 1700s to give commoners a place for hanami, and the tradition continues with around 600 trees spread along both banks between Azuma-bashi and Sakura-bashi. The east (Sumida) bank, site of the former Mito Tokugawa residence, has a small Japanese pond garden and offers the classic view of Skytree rising above the blossoms and the boats. The Sumida River Walk footbridge alongside the Tobu railway links the park to Tokyo Mizumachi's cafés. The Sumida River Fireworks on the last Saturday of July are one of Japan's oldest and biggest.
